Diamonds

Everything you need to know before choosing — explained simply, the way we explain it in the showroom.

A diamond is judged on four things.

Known as the 4Cs — Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat — they are the universal language used by gemmologists to describe and compare every diamond in the world.

No single C makes a diamond “best”. The right stone is the right balance of the four for your taste and budget, and we are happy to guide you.

Understanding your diamond

01

Cut

Cut is how well a diamond’s facets are proportioned and polished — not its shape. It is the factor that most affects sparkle: a well-cut diamond returns light through the top, while a poorly cut one leaks it out of the sides or bottom and looks dull.

ExcellentVery GoodGoodFairPoor

Our advice: choose Excellent or Very Good. If you must compromise on one C, make it anything but cut.

02

Colour

Colour grades how much body colour a white diamond shows, from D (completely colourless) to Z (light yellow or brown). The less colour, the rarer the stone — but differences between neighbouring grades are very subtle to the eye, especially once the diamond is set.

D–F ColourlessG–J Near colourlessK–M FaintN–Z Light

Our advice: G–H looks white in yellow gold and platinum alike, and offers excellent value. Choose D–F for the whitest look in white metals.

03

Clarity

Almost every natural diamond contains tiny birthmarks called inclusions. Clarity measures their size, number and position. Most are invisible without 10× magnification.

FL / IF FlawlessVVS1–2VS1–2SI1–2I1–3

Our advice: VS1–VS2 is “eye-clean” — flawless to the naked eye — at a far lower price than VVS or Flawless.

04

Carat

Carat is weight, not size: one carat equals 0.2 grams and is divided into 100 points. Price rises sharply at popular milestones such as 0.50, 1.00 and 2.00 carats, because larger stones are rarer.

0.50 ct ≈ 5.1 mm1.00 ct ≈ 6.5 mm1.50 ct ≈ 7.4 mm2.00 ct ≈ 8.1 mm

Our advice: a 0.90–0.95 ct stone looks virtually identical to 1.00 ct but costs noticeably less. Sizes shown are for round brilliants.
